Description of our works:

Networking

We spent a lot of time exploring the networking protocols. In doing this, we thought one day, how abut implementing everything we studied so far? Then, Sakib sir arranged a lab for us & we started digging it. We did everything from the scratch, yes from the scratch. Scratch means from the cabling, wiring, IP assigning, etc etc all the kidz stuffs. We implented all the theories we had about networking & configured our own dhcp, dns, ftp, smtp etc etc servers. Then we started our work with wireless technology. We collected wi-fi access points and dongles from CSEDU, used those devices to set up a WLAN. We then developed a way to expand the normal range of wi-fi singnals ( 30-100 metres) up to 2 Km. This range expansion project was funded by our beloved Hanif Vai.

We also did network programming in our lan too. We used linux operating systems and C, JAVA, C#, C++ as language. This was fun.

Mobile Application

Our next goal was to develop some mobile applications. To do this we used J2ME. We aimed to build an office or campus management system. We tried to use the underlying wi-fi intranet infrastructure. As a result, our software (EDUPACK) is capable of real-time streaming as well as notice publishing, viewing, finding people in the campus, offline messeging, chatting etc. EDUPACK is a complete campus or office management tool which can be used by mobile phones, PDA, laptops. Its a server-client like software where the server should be in a linux system. The client is built using J2ME (platform independent). Servers are written in C.

The most interesting point is that, we used our own data structure in EDUPACK & we were very proud to do that. Later it was discovered that it could be done more easily if XML was used !! While making the software, we discovered that, it was going to be a very useful software for Bangladesh. Within few years, there should be some wifi zones. Already some offices have their internal WLAN. So, there should be some softwares like this.

SMS Gateway

This project was a pretty intersting one. We built a cool SMS gateway using linux pc and a mobile phone. This gateway can be preconfigured to answer automatically. This is a fully automated process.

Actually this software is a tool which can be used for many purposes. For example, Reneta Pharma is going to use this software to satisfy their user queries about their medicine.

Wanna test a litte flavour? Go here. ( not completely functional yet...having uploading & database problem )

Router Configuration

For our work,IIT gave us a wireles router, some wireless AP & some dongles to use. One day, while we were just examining their usefulness through downloading songs, we thought to establish the router. Then we found its a bit different. So, digging the networking book began. We found it interesting, as a result we talked with some real big fellas about routing & got the hint. We are now satisfied & happy to say that we know how to configure a router for our network. But not CISCO or other stuffs. Like all our other works we did this from the basic stuffs. We configured a linux pc as a router. Later the wireless router. But still we are seeking any chance to have some real practical knowledge about routing.

IPv6

Once again we have to start with Sakib sir. Sakib sir often does some impossible stuffs so easily that it has become his habit now & we are no more surprised. One sunny day while we were enjoying the sun in the swimming pool, one messenger from Sakib sir dragged us from the pool to the workshop held at IIT by APNIC. That was a 3 day long workshop with great foods. That workshop was mainly for the ISPs, so for us, the students there were a little to be satisfied. But one thing surely they did, they made us interested in IPv6. As a result, we studied about this new era of IP, practically implemented it & some of us are doing their final year project on IPv6.

Oh, one more thing to say, Ivan & Zeeshan won a bag and an umbrella from the quiz arranged at the last day, but they never let the others touch them :-( .

Wi-fi hotspot

Thats our latest work. We are now capable of setting up a total wifi hotspot with AAA support. Soon, IIT is going to be one hotspot.

In a hotspot, users can connect using wi-fi, surf net, download etc etc iff the administrator wants to. That means not all hotspots are open for all. There can be billing systems too. This theme is also a new one in Bangladesh. Its like an Open Cyber Cafe where no hassle to keep the time records & cash payment.

The one we are going to set up in the IIT may not going to be a open one. One must have username/password to browse internet sites. But internal servers can be accessed & our EDUPACK may also be available for testing.

Our Passions

In our works so far the main passion of our work was learning. We dont know anything, we want to know something new. One other passion is using Open Source and/or Free softwares. We use Open Source & FREE Operating Systems, Softwares.

We strictly stands against piracy ( ... not so strict with audio piracy). So, we discourage using pirated softwares. We are trying to raise opinions. We already organized a seminar where non tech people came and shot many peculear questions about linux OS. But we handled them fine (so, they are using linux as well as windows). Soon, we are going to arrange more seminars, talkes etc etc to spread our passion among others.

But still we did not have any Open Source works, that means still we didn't any work as Open Source or FREE. But we have plans about it.
